The Last Ordinary Night.
Thesis

On 2 August we remember the invasion , but this film doesn't open with tanks like everyone else. It opens on the last ordinary night. On the evening of 1 August 1990 life was utterly normal in Kuwait: a wedding being planned, a child asleep, a fisherman readying his boat for dawn, a city dozing safely beneath its three towers. Shortly after midnight (the early hours of 2 August) the tanks of Saddam's regime crossed the border from the north; Dasman Palace was assaulted and Sheikh Fahd Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah was killed defending it, and by midday the capital had fallen. In the chaos of the invasion Kuwait's prisons were thrown open and more than a thousand inmates escaped , among them the Iran-backed cell convicted for the 1983 bombings of the US and French embassies in Kuwait, including Mustafa Badreddine, later a senior Hezbollah military commander, who were handed to Iran; the army looted the country in an occupation that lasted about seven months. Kuwait was liberated on 26 February 1991, but the wounds remained: some 605 prisoners and missing persons, the remains of some still being recovered from Iraq to this day, and around 600,700 oil wells that the retreating Iraqi army set ablaze, so the sky burned for months (the last capped in November 1991). Honest frame: the aggressor was Saddam's regime and army, not the Iraqi people who suffered under him, and the event has nothing to do with Iran. We remember the last ordinary night , not to weep, but to know the worth of peace and to guard it.
