عندما هدد ترامب عُمان بالنسف، لم يهدد الحلقة الأضعف.. هدد الدولة التي تملك الفيتو على مضيق هرمز. المضيق بأكمله — كل قطرة منه — مياه إقليمية بين إيران وعُمان، تقاسموها بموجب اتفاقية ترسيم بحري وقّعتها الدولتان عام 1974. لا ميل واحد منه مياه دولية، رغم تصريح ترامب. وأي اتفاق يخص المضيق يستحيل أن يمر قانونياً دون توقيع عُمان. وأمريكا، المفارقة، تحتج بقانون بحار لم توقع عليه أصلاً.
When Trump threatened to "blow up" Oman, he didn't pick the weakest link — he picked the country that holds the legal veto over the Strait of Hormuz. The entire 21 nautical miles of the strait are the territorial waters of Iran and Oman, divided between them by a 1974 maritime boundary treaty. No international middle exists, despite Trump's claim. Any agreement on the strait legally requires Oman's signature — and the United States, ironically, is invoking a law of the sea it never ratified.
